And 5-Chapter Reviews benefit your whole book! Plot, pacing, character, or worldbuilding issues in the first few chapters often spread themselves throughout the entire story like stubborn Bermuda grass. Finding problem spots early is the key to uncovering their origin point and stopping them from becoming baked into the story.
The Process:
Before I get started, you’ll fill out a form and give me a short synopsis of your story, its major themes, and let me know if there’s any specific feedback you’re looking for.
While I read, I’ll make a few notes in the margins with my reactions as a reader, but I’ll also ask clarifying questions and point out anything confusing. Then I’ll write you a 1 to 2 page mini editorial letter detailing the strengths and weaknesses in your early chapters.
You’ll get specific examples and possible solutions for problems in your pages. I’ll always leave you with a place to start!
I also offer a mini book coaching call if you want to sit down in person to discuss the feedback and brainstorm ideas. A coaching call is especially useful if you’ve found yourself stuck in the notorious “messy middle” or your manuscript is already complete and you’re not sure how to get started.
A review of your first several chapters can provide the boost you need to (re)start revisions by confirming your story is doing the job you wrote it for and setting you down at the optimal starting line.
